Winter Red-Tails

Chasing red-tailed hawks has been tremendous fun so far in 2018, since the trees are bare and the hawks are easier to spot. The newest video series featuring the hawks is called Winter Red-Tails, and so far four videos have been created to celebrate these raptors. (It was also fun chasing them in December, which you can see in Ho! Ho! Hawks!!!)

The four videos cover January 18 through February 21, 2018, and were taken in Central Park, at Stateline Lookout, on Staten Island and near the Harlem Piers. Some contain graphic hawk dining, so be prepared.

Another Silly Video by Susan Kirby. Watching the red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) during winter is great fun, because you can spot them more easily on the bare branches. This video continues the Chasing the Hawks series with juvenile and adult hawks seen in Central Park and Stateline Lookout on January 17, 18, 19 and 20, 2018.
Another Silly Video by Susan Kirby. Lots of red-tails in this video, starting with the flight of a red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) near Miller Field on Staten Island on Feb. 6, a brief view of a hawk near the Harlem Piers on Feb.
Another Silly Video by Susan Kirby. The red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) in this video were seen February 1 and 5, 2018, in Central Park. The first-year hawk seen at the beginning caught a pigeon near the Falconer Statue, stood on it for a while until some dogs made her nervous and she flew to a tree just north of Sheep Meadow.
Another Silly Video by Susan Kirby. Part IV of the Winter Red-Tails series features Fred and Ginger, two adult red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) who reside on the west side of Central Park, between 72nd Street and 96th Street. They were seen on February 20 and 21 displaying hunting and mating behavior.

These are some of the photos taken during the days spent chasing the hawks. For more, visit the Red-Tailed Hawks page, as well as the Red-Tailed Hawks: Fred and Ginger page.
