Least terns (Sternula antillarum) are the smallest of the terns we see in America. They breed on the beaches around New York City, and also on the beaches of Long Island. I have walked the beaches many times and am always delighted to see these feisty little birds.

A visit to Long Island on June 7, 2021, gave me the opportunity to film a story of unrequited ardor.

Least terns breed at Nickerson Beach on Long Island, and I got a chance to see four new arrivals on May 17, 2019, on the beach. I love their little yellow bills.
